Thinking about an adult autism evaluation? Learn what happens at each step, how to prepare, what you'll leave with, and how long it takes.

The short answer: An adult autism evaluation is a set of conversations and assessments that look at how you think, communicate, and experience the world, both now and growing up. At Neurokin, it takes three visits. You'll talk about your history, complete questionnaires and tests, and then go over your results. You leave with a clear answer and a written care plan.

Why adults seek an autism evaluation

Many autistic adults were never evaluated as children. This is especially true for women, people of color, and people who did well in school. Common reasons adults reach out:

  • A lifelong feeling of being "different" without knowing why
  • Burnout after years of masking, or hiding autistic traits to fit in
  • A child or relative was recently diagnosed, and the traits sound familiar
  • ADHD or anxiety treatment helped, but didn't explain everything
  • Wanting to understand yourself, or to get support at work or school

What happens, step by step

Visit 1: We listen

We talk about your life now and your history. Topics often include:

  • Friendships, relationships, and social energy
  • How you communicate and what feels easy or hard
  • Routines, change, and transitions
  • Sensory experiences, like sounds, lights, textures, or crowds
  • Deep interests
  • School, work, and burnout
  • Your health, sleep, and mental health history

There are no wrong answers. Many adults find it helpful to bring notes.

Visit 2: We test

You complete questionnaires and structured assessments. These look at autistic traits, attention, and thinking skills. Because ADHD and autism often happen together, we may also look at ADHD. If that applies to you, we can evaluate both in one process.

Visit 3: We explain everything

We go over your results in plain language. You get:

  • Your diagnosis, if one fits
  • A written report and care plan
  • Ideas for support at home, work, or school
  • Time to ask questions

How to prepare

  • Write down examples from your daily life, past and present
  • Find old report cards or school notes, if you have them
  • Ask a parent, sibling, or old friend what you were like as a child
  • List any past diagnoses and medicines
  • Think about what you hope to get from the evaluation

What if I'm not autistic?

That's still a useful answer. Social anxiety, ADHD, trauma, and other conditions can look like autism. We'll explain what we found and what may help.

Our approach

We are neurodiversity-affirming. Autism is a different way of experiencing the world, not something to fix. Our goal is to help you understand yourself and get the support you want.
